The representatives from local government of Yulin, magnesium industry associations, research institutes, universities and enterprises were invited to the symposium. The attendees include: Mr. Xu Jinxiang, president of China Non-ferrous Metals Industry Association Magnesium; Prof. Zheng Yanjun, director of Materials Science Branch of National Natural Science Foundation of China; Mr. Bai Haiyang, Deputy director of Bureau of Industry and Information Technology of Yulin; Mr.Wu Xiaolei, researcher from Mechanics Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Mr.Chen Rongshi, researcher from Institute of metal research of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Prof. Zheng Yufeng from Peking University; Prof. Wu Ruizhi from Harbin Engineering University; Prof. Zheng Mingyi from Harbin Institute of Technology; Prof. Wang Huiyuan from Jilin University; Prof. Qin Gaowu from Northeastern University; Prof. Yu Kun and Prof. Du Yong from Central South University; Prof. ZhangJing from Chongqing University; Prof. Xue Feng from Southeast University; Prof. Zhang Shaojun from Zhengzhou University; Mr. Wang Pengfei, Vice President of Shaanxi Fugu Tianyu Mineral Industrial Group and Mr. Xu Shiwei, Chief scientist of Baosteel Group.

 

The symposium commenced at 9:00AM with a brief self-introduction of each attendee. Then Mr. Xu Jinxiang first made a general introduction of magnesium industry in China. He pointed out the key problem of the development of magnesium industry in China, which is the incapability in producing magnesium of high quality and stable quality. Then he analyzed the prospect of this industry on taking the Aluminum industry as the example. He also called on the responsibility to make the process of magnesium production more standardized, industrialized and large-scale. 

 

Following Xu’s introduction, Prof. Shan Zhiwei gave a presentation on the current situation of magnesium industry in Shanxi Province. He showed the attendees the result of the field visit with his group to the magnesium production factories in Yulin. This report revealed several problems in the current production process of magnesium, which includes serious dust pollution, the lack of automation and industrialization in production and high content of impurities in  products. These problems have ultimately delayed the large-scale application of magnesium-based products and therefore should be solved urgently. His talk resonated with all participants especially the representatives of enterprises and sparked a vigorous debate among them. 

 

The symposium continued at 2:00 PM, the representatives from universities and scientific research institutes each gave a presentation on their achievements and current works. They also expressed their views on the future development of the magnesium industry.

 

In the end of this symposium, Prof. Zheng Yanjun stated that National Natural Science Foundation will give full support to the establishment of the cooperation platform on developing the magnesium industry. Mr. Bai Haiyang also expressed the support for the school-enterprise cooperations on behalf of the government of Yulin.
