On June 7, 2018, the Nano-Mechanics application technology seminar was successfully held at Zhongying building of School of Materials Science and Engineering, which was organized by State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behavior of Materials of Xi’an Jiaotong University, CAMP-Nano, Hysitron China Applied Research Center and Bruker Corporation. The seminar aims to promote the discussion and exchange of scientific researchers and technical workers related to nanomechanical testing technology.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof Zhangjie Wang. Dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering Prof Zhiwei Shan gave the opening remarks and welcomed all the invited speakers and attendees.
During the day, 9 reports were delivered, among which, four were from teachers and PhD students from CAMP-NANO. Prof. Bin Gan from Northwestern Polytechnical University gave us the first talk. The topic is” High Temperature Small Scale Mechanical Testing Techniques and Application to Evaluate Nickel-base Superalloys”. In his report, by combination of nano mechanics and microstructural characterization tools, the new deformation mechanism is well illustrated.
Next, Pal-Jen Wei from Bruker reported “Coupled Thermal-Electrical-Mechanical Measurements at Nano-scale: Applications of TSV”. Taking advantage of vivid metaphor, we understood the key technique of 3D-IC: TSV and its challenge. By coupled measurement, the crack propagation and electron migration leading to leakage of TSV were well demonstrated.

Longchao Huang gave a report named “Multi-field coupling mechanics of submicron sized crystals: in situ quantitative ETEM study”. The report included two parts. In force-thermal coupling, deformation behavior of micro single crystal Al was reported. High temperature and large-scale pillars caused the deformation change from shear to diffusion. The other part is hydrogen effect on desolation behaviors of α-Fe.
In addition to metals, reports also includes nano mechanical testing on biological materials. Zhengzhi Wang from Wuhan University gave a novel report of “Nanomechancal testing on biological and bioinsired functional gradient interface and surface”. Jianxue Zhu gave a talk of application of Nano DMA technology in biomechanics. In his report, dynamic mechanic analysis technology is applied to temporomandibular joint cartilage mechanical behavior property analysis.

In the afternoon, senior Manager, the inventor of ECR, Douglas Stauffer gave his talk about “Nano indentation: Materials Mechanics from Fundamentals to In Operando Performance”. Later, Zhangjie Wang gave a speech on topic of “Exploring the deformation mechanism of submicron sized FCC metals inside TEM”, which illustrated in-situ tensile and compression tests of FCC materials in detail and explains the size effect of collapse phenomena systematically. At last, Boyu Liu gave us a wonderful final report “In-situ TEM study on the deformation twinning in Mg alloys”. Twinning in Mg easily growing to large volume was seen under TEM and three ways were design to impede twinning deformation. Finally, he throw out an egg about the content to report next year and welcome researchers’ attendance.

After reports, the live demonstration session was held at the State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behavior of Materials. Demonstration experiments included nano mechanical testing in Scanning Electron Microscope, nano mechanical testing in Transmission Electron Microscope, nano mechanical testing in Environmental Transmission Electron Microscope and nano indentation experiments.
