The symposium on corrosion mechanism of magnesium alloy and design of high performance magnesium alloy, organized by Shanghai Jiaotong University and Xi’an Jiaotong University, was successfully held in Shanghai on Aug. 25th and 26th. Prof. Shan Zhiwei attended the symposium as one of the sponsors. The attendees included professors and researchers from universities and institutes as well as representatives from enterprises, such as General Motors, Huawei, Yinguang Group etc. The symposium aims at determining a guideline for further researches on Mg alloy and seeking for the possibilities of establishing an union of scholars in this field. Dr. Boyu Liu and the other four students of CAMP-Nano, Yuecun Wang, Nan Yang, Nan Liu and Fei Liu also attended.
Prof. Ding Wenjiang, the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, gave the opening remark. He mentioned the advantages and challenges of domestic development of Mg alloys. China has rich reserves of magnesium and is one of the frontrunners in Mg-related researches. Nevertheless, the lack of self-owned design ability and platforms for communications among researchers prohibit the further development in this field. He pointed out that the key issue of this symposium shall focus on improving the innovative capability of Chinese magnesium industry and transforming magnesium alloy as a business card of Chinese industry to the world.
Dr. Zheng Yanjun, the director of Engineering Material Department of materials in the National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC), stated the principle of the future works of NSFC. He indicated that forming a good academic circle with friendly atmosphere and ensuring young scientists who have really good ideas to get financial support are important goals of their efforts. He hoped this kind of symposium can be organized periodically, like twice a year.
Prof. Zeng Xiaoqin, deputy dean of School of Material Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiaotong University, who is also the organizer of this symposium gave a review talk on the recent progress in Mg alloy. In his talk, he summarized the existing problems and promising research directions in the field.
In the following two days, the scholars from universities made reports on their recent works on Mg alloy design and anti-corrosion methods, some of which attracted lots of interests of participants. For example, Prof.Shan Zhiwei reported a novel method using for anti-corrosion on the surface of Mg magnesium, which led to a heated discussion. Besides, representatives from enterprises also presented the current situations of practical usage of Mg alloy in industry and their urgent demands for high performance Mg alloy.
At the end of all reports, a discussion session was open for free exchanges of ideas. Some key research directions were put forward and the issue on the establishment of an union on Mg alloy research was further discussed and promoted.
