Recently, one of the most significant challenges for senior PhD candidates is the interim doctoral defense, whose aim is to follow their progress and encourage these PhD candidates to accelerate the pace of their study. On July 6th , eight PhD candidates of CAMP-Nano attended the interim doctoral defense. They are Yongqiang Zhang、Xiaoguang Wang、Yuecun Wang、Yao Li、Songyu Yan、Tao Dai、Jiangjing Wang and Lie Yang.

These candidates were divided into two groups: the first four were evaluated by the committee leaded by Prof. Zhongxiao Song and the rest four were evaluated by the committee leaded by Prof. Xiangdong Ding. At first, Songyu Yan gave a talk about “study on indentation size effect of HEAs”; later , Tao Dai gave a report on “Research on bismuth based cathode materials of liquid metal battery”, a patent introduced in his talk which would be put into real production attracted much attention and discussion from the committee; then Jiangjing Wang made his report about “Study on the structures and properties of phase change materials GeSbTe”; finally, Lie Yang talked about his work on “Study of SnO2-based nano-composites used for electrochemical energy storage”. All of these works were highly praised by the committee.

Later in the afternoon, the rest candidates made their defenses. Firstly, Yao Li talked about “The mechanism of epitaxial dendrite growth and solidification cracking formation in Ni-based superalloy fabricated by laser cladding technology”, which aroused a lot of interests; then Xiaoguang Wang gave a talk about “Quantitative research of Multi-field property on wurtzite structural semiconductor nanowires”, he spent plenty of time on the research of ZnO and GaN nanowire, particularly, his work “Growth conditions control the elastic and electrical properties of ZnO nanowires” was published on Nano Letters ; later, Yuecun Wang showed her work about “In situ TEM study of the plastic deformation and crystalline-to-amorphous transition in Si”, which will be soon published on Asia Materials; at last, Yongqiang Zhang talked about his study on “Engineering and application of metal-insulator transition in vanadium dioxide nanowires”, which appealed to the committee members.

In a word, eight PhD candidates had successfully completed their interim defense. All of them had made great progress on their research and their works ere all highly appreciated. Congratulations to them!
