Five undergraduates acquired excellent results in the graduation project
author:Qizhi Wang   time:2016-07-05

For senior undergraduate students, one of the most vital things is finishing the graduation project, and a total of 8 students chose CAMP-Nano to complete their theses and 5 of them acquired "Excellent" eventually. Congratulations to Chenxiao Dang, Jiao Li, Qizhi Wang, Wenxin Zhu and Yucong Miao.

Among these 5 outstanding graduation projects, 4 projects is about Magnesium, for magnesium has many excellent properties and is widely used in any sector that has a demand for light-weight alloys. Yucong Miao provides a novel and feasible method for magnesium’s corrosion protection. He is inspired to use MgCO3, which has high compactness when formed on magnesium’s surface, as the candidate for magnesium’s general protection. Miao’s work uses high-energy electron beam to activate the low pressure CO2 gas inside an environmental TEM and under room temperature the activated gas can react with MgO nanoparticles to form MgCO3. Now this results has been extended to the macroscopic scale and quantitative electrochemistry experiments has revealed a substantial increase in the treated sample’s corrosion potential. And Chenxiao Dang studies on the strain rate sensitivity of nanoscaled metallic glass, trying to explore the microscopic mechanism of Mg’s deformation by investigating the strain rate sensitivity of nano-scaled metallic glass of CuZr based. In addition, Jiao Li’s project focuses on drawbacks of the existing smelting process in magnesium enterprises, aiming to carry out technical transformation based on experiments in laboratory. In order to obtain a comprehensive grasp of this project, CAMP-Nano offered her an opportunity to conduct on-site study in magnesium enterprises, after which she carried on a series of experiments in laboratory. Not only Jiao Li, Qizhi Wang has her eyes on the process of magnesium as well, and she studies on the processing of ultrapure magnesium using vaccum distillation method.

Besides, Wenxin Zhu develops an automated analytical methods and software of Synchrotron polychromatic X-ray microdiffraction ( -XRD) measurement’s Laue patterns, aiming at promoting analysis efficiency. Supervised by Prof. Kai Chen from CAMP-Nano and with the help of Guangni Zhou and other CAMPers, Zhu’s work has been published on Scientific Reports and he is the 1st author.

During the whole period of graduation project, the undergraduates in CAMP-Nano learned a lot of skills and knowledge and they all want to show their appreciation to CAMPers. Chenxiao Dang said, “Thanks Prof. Shan for the guidance and thanks Dr. Tian for teaching me by holding my hand. Although I just spent about 2 months in the CAMP NANO, I had already loved it deeply and I could not wait to be the member of it.” Jiao LI said, “Patience, passion, practice and persistence are all necessary factors to achieve a good job. In addition, a first-class platform that equipped with cutting-edge instruments and powered by fun-loving and exploratory spirits like CAMP-Nano does provide great assistance for our improvement.” Yucong Miao said. “For any undergraduate student that aspires to accomplish an amazing project, I sincerely offer the following suggestions based on my successes and failures: (1) Devote time. (2) Devote mind. (3) Discuss and communicate. (4) And CAMP-Nano will be the best choice.”
