On December 12 to 13, 2017, six campers attended the Metal Structure Materials Forum held in Xi’an. The forum is organized by State Key Laboratory of Solidification Processing, Northwestern Polytechnical University. A number of well-known scholars in the field of metal structure materials participated in the forum and gave many wonderful reports. They made in-depth discussions on the opportunities and challenges of metal structural materials, which is a traditional discipline.

Prof. Zhiwei Shan was invited to give a presentation entitled Sliding deformation of coherent twins in copper and nonconventional properties of twins in magnesium. The main contents include the theory and experimental evidences of the slip deformation of coherent twin boundaries in copper, which has updated the understanding that the co-twin boundaries can’t slip. And the content aroused the attentions and lively discussions of participants. In addition, by studying the strength and plasticity of magnesium alloys with different densities, Prof. Shan showed people the unconventional characteristics of twins in magnesium and provided a criterion for roughly predicting the strength and ductility of magnesium through the distribution and shape of precipitated phases in magnesium alloys.
