Lecture: First-Principles Design of Two-Dimensional Materials and Potential Applications

Biography: Dr. Jian Zhou received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from Peking University. After appointed as a post-doctoral researcher at Virginia Commonwealth University and then at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he joined CAMP-Nano at Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2018. Dr. Zhou’s recent research mainly focuses on first-principles design of novel low-dimensional materials with their applications, including spintronics, topological materials, valleytronics, energy materials, and phase change materials. He has published more than 60 papers in peer reviewed journals, including PNAS, JACS, PRL, Nano Lett., and Angew. Chem. These papers have been cited over 2000 times.

Abstract: Graphene has taught us ample novel knowledge in two-dimensional materials and brought new potential applications for the next-generation electronic devices. Inspired by graphene, more 2D materials have been predicted and fabricated. First-principles theoretical predictions have made a lot of contributions to guide new materials and their applications. In this talk, I will briefly discuss a few examples to predict new 2D materials with promising applications. Our predictions include design of 2D ferromagnetic materials with high Curie temperature, (magnetic) topological (crystalline) insulators, and phase change ferroelastic materials.
